My Wool Clogs Feel Smaller, Larger, or Different Than Before

Because Stegmann clogs are made from natural wool, they can occasionally change shape due to wear, moisture, humidity, temperature, and storage conditions.

In many cases, minor fit changes can be improved. However, it's important to understand what caused the change and the risks involved in attempting to reshape wool.

Why Do Wool Clogs Change Shape?

Wool is a natural fiber that responds to:

  • Moisture
  • Heat
  • Humidity
  • Normal wear
  • Storage conditions

Over time, wool may conform slightly to the shape of your foot, resulting in a roomier fit in certain areas.

Conversely, exposure to moisture and heat can sometimes cause wool to shrink.

My Clogs Feel Looser Than Before

Over time, natural materials adapt to the shape of your foot.

This may create a roomier fit, particularly:

  • Across the forefoot
  • Around the instep
  • In areas that experience frequent pressure

This is a normal characteristic of wool footwear and does not necessarily indicate a defect.

My Clogs Shrank After Getting Wet

If your clogs became saturated with water and were exposed to heat, shrinkage can occur.

This is similar to the felting process used to create wool footwear.

Common causes include:

  • Direct sunlight while wet
  • Hair dryers
  • Radiators
  • Heating vents
  • Other external heat sources

For this reason, we recommend:

  • Avoiding full saturation whenever possible
  • Never applying direct heat to wet wool footwear
  • Allowing wet footwear to air dry naturally

Can Shrunken Clogs Be Stretched Back Out?

Sometimes.

If your clogs have already dried and feel too small, you may try the following method:

  1. Lightly dampen the wool using a spray bottle.
  2. Put the clogs on your feet.
  3. Stuff the clogs as needed to help maintain the desired shape.
  4. Allow them to air dry naturally while retaining the shape of your foot.
  5. Avoid walking extensively in them while drying.

This method may help restore some of the lost space and shape.

My Clogs Have Stretched Too Much

Once wool footwear has stretched significantly, it can be difficult to restore it to its original shape in a controlled manner.

One method some customers choose to try is:

  1. Lightly dampen the wool with a spray bottle.
  2. Put the clogs on your feet.
  3. Apply gentle heat only to the upper portion of the wool using a hair dryer.
  4. Monitor carefully during the process.

This may result in slight shrinkage of the wool.

However, there are risks associated with this method.

Important Risks

Applying heat to wool footwear can:

  • Warp the wool
  • Cause uneven shrinkage
  • Affect the fit
  • Potentially weaken sole adhesion

For that reason, we generally recommend caution whenever heat is involved.

Does Stegmann Guarantee These Results?

No.

Because every situation is different and natural wool responds differently depending on the circumstances, we cannot guarantee the success of any reshaping method.

Additionally, water-related damage is not covered under warranty.

Any attempts to reshape, stretch, or shrink wool footwear are performed at the customer's own risk.

How Can I Prevent Fit Changes?

To help maintain the shape of your wool clogs:

  • Avoid soaking them in water
  • Allow wet footwear to air dry naturally
  • Keep them away from direct heat sources
  • Store them in a cool, dry environment
  • Wear them regularly to maintain their natural shape
